KUMPULAN Perangsang Selangor Bhd (Perangsang Selangor) will continue its badminton talent scouting and selection process in a bid to nurture more youngsters to represent the state and national teams.

Since 2014, several talent discovered through Perangsang Selangor’s programmes were trained to take part in competitions.

Chief coach Jason Wong is hoping that his charges will be selected for the Selangor state squads.

“The programmes focus on training and grooming grass-roots players for the national level.

“They are given the chance to be trained on the basic foundations of the game and we will push them to participate in school-level tournaments before proceeding to higher level tournaments.

“We have players such as Letshanaa Karupathevan, 15, and Wong Zheng Wei, 17, who were under the Perangsang Selangor programme since it started and they will be invited to the national back-up squad selection soon,” he told StarMetro.

Wong said shuttlers at the grass-roots level now lack a strong foundation to sustain themselves and advancing to a higher level.

“The foundation work has to be done correctly, but players these days prefer instant results where without proper training, their skills would become stagnant after a while.

“They lack proper guidance in the foundation of the sports such as techniques, speed, power, mental strength and injury prevention methods.

“We have been entrusted with the task to groom players starting with the basics, and that is what we will do during the training clinics,” he said.

Wong added that Perangsang’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes involving underprivileged groups such as the orang asli community, orphans, autistic children and single mothers in badminton clinics, were likely to continue this year.

“The schedule has not been fixed but it is expected to be ready by the last two weeks of the month.

“These CSR programmes will still play an important role for us to scout talent, especially from rural areas, and promote the sport at the grass-roots level and among less privileged communities.

“Last year, we had eight of such clinics as well as talent scouting and development programmes involving 334 participants.

“During the talent scouting and development programmes, a total of 26 individuals were scouted and eight of them were selected for the training camp,” he said.

Perangsang Selangor’s last CSR programme was the Badminton Family Carnival and meet-and-greet session with national players. It was held last month at Champion Arena in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara, Petaling Jaya.

A total of 200 participants attended the event with national female shuttlers such as Chow Mei Kuan, Lee Meng Yean, Lai Pei Jing and Lim Chiew Sien guiding the youngsters.
